What we would consider to be a nightmarish emotional roller-coaster has finally come to an end. The NFL has announced that the league and the referees have come to an agreement on their terms and our zebras will come back to work for tonight’s game. The picture says it all. The NFL and Roger Goodell no longer had a leg to stand on once the Green Bay vs. Seattle “interception” or “Failed Mary” was ruled a touchdown which intern produced a loss instead of a well-earned victory for the Packers. The effect of that one call flipped the league, fantasy teams and Vegas on their heads.
Grown men around the country were nearly brought to tears as they watched their fantasy teams lose by the points they would have won by if Green Bay would have been awarded the INT. You could have almost heard the groans from Vegas as the $250,000,000+ exchanged hands in the wrong direction. And the season ticket holders were starting to take bids on their seats. By not closing this deal this week, Goodell was looking at fandom starting to sway, and that could have been costly. It is better to fork up the millions to stop the bleeding before it got worse.
This Green Bay vs. Seattle play was just the straw that broke the camel’s back in a long progression of terrible calls, and some would say, game changers. Since pre-season, anyone watching was well aware of the dangers of the replacement scabs. However it’s appalling nature was not realized until cities started seeing their teams lose because of the incompetence of the black and whites. So, it is with extreme elation that we can finally say WELCOM BACK!
