Bollards line our sidewalks and roadways like a real-world dot-to-dot. They’re the ubiquitous, yet often unnoticed posts and poles that line streets, lots, and walkways. Aside from the occasional grade-schooler playing leap-frog, or very unfortunate roller blade accident, they largely go accepted and unnoticed. They serve many crucial functions, from directing traffic, to . . . . well, mainly they just help protect and direct the flow of traffic.
Luckily, we live in a society where the modern man, being given adequate provisions-galore, finds himself in need of something that quells his primal urge to smash, conquer and pillage. When lawn darts and iPad Farmville no longer quench that thirst, the poor, unsuspecting bollard often takes one for the team. To much amusement, these tough little poles are more formidable than they seem, and generally end up winning any battle thrown their way.
Bollard Ballad- Medley
This video features unsuspecting drivers and retractable bollards. In London, there are areas where only buses are allowed to drive, and their routes are kept clear for them by retractable bollards. Oftentimes, drivers desperately try and snake the system, sneaking past, however, it’s usually the bollard that has the last laugh.
This seems like a normal traffic camera, carefully monitoring the daily flow of cars and busses, then all of a sudden the bollards pop out of nowhere- punching up those little cars like a reverse whack-a-mole.
Truck Vs. Bollard
Here we have a small, unsuspecting little bollard just minding its own business, when an unmanned semi truck is flung full speed ahead in it’s direction. You’d think the bollard would be obliterated.
Although it’s difficult to see in the aftermath of the wreckage that once was a truck, the bollard maintains its integrity, splitting the truck almost completely in half without so much as a wince. If you find yourself stuck in a Russian winter, with only a series of tow ropes, hooks, a large truck, and traffic control devices at TrafficGuard.net, you too could conduct this riveting experiment.
Safety Crash Test | Bollards
This is scripted, but it shows just how powerful these small poles can be. Watch as the truck careens straight for the camera, only a small red bollard in its way, then gets completely obliterated as if the bollard has some super alien technology capable of stopping enemy armies.
Next time you find yourself tempted to weave in and out of a traffic guarded roadway, or wonder if that little bollard between you and a cliff is keeping you safe, just call to mind these videos of those who fought the bollards, and the bollards won.
