If you were ever a kid growing up on the West Coast you would probably have seen one of the Shamu Killer Whales perform at Sea World…however this Shamu has taken the show to a whole new level. During the show, Shamu, along with her young, kills and eats a pelican that decided to stop off at the pool and say hi.
The video starts off as normal as can be with a trainer and a young girl interacting with the gargantuan, deadly animal (which is safe). However within the first 1:15 of the video you see Shamu head over to the far side of the pool and take out the inquisitive pelican. What follows is even more interesting…
After taking it out, Shamu not only starts to eat it, but shows her kids what to do as well. Although all have been born in captivity, it is plain to see that the motherly and killer instincts are still strong no matter what the environment.
Our favorite parts are: 1) When the kids start eating it and tear off the bird’s wing. 2) When the trainers are standing around looking like idiots and can’t get them to stop tearing the bird apart 3) The other sea birds eating the remains of the pelican while Shamu’s kid tries to get at them.
Now, I can see why the trainers stopped the show and cleaned up the mess…who really wants to swim with a bunch of dead pelican parts in the water. However I would be more scared that the whales now know how to hunt and could see me as a new meal. Like the first Shamu, and all of her predecessors, these orcas are always prone to taking out a trainer or two. So after a hunt, I doubt any of them will be going into the water anytime soon.
