Freddie Wong: visual effects ninja and co-founder of VGHS

VGHS (Video Game High School) is a new webseries project based out of Los Angeles, CA, and headed up by visual effects ninja, Freddie Wong. In case you don’t know who Freddie Wang is, him and his partner, Brandon Laatsch, have managed to produce the 7th most subscribed YouTube channel of all time (as of today, that’s 3,204,495 active subscribers). Their channel consists of over 100 short films which they star in, edit, and produce some of the most amazing high action, low budget films you’ve ever seen… With their skills in the mix, it’s no wonder this new webseries is so awesome. But you might be asking yourself, “How do they pay for these movies?” That’s where KickStarter comes in.

Back in October 2011, Wang and the gang started a KickStarter project (VGHS) with the goal of raising a mere $75,000, in order to make there webseries into a reality. With the help of 5,661 backers, they were able to raise almost $275,000… Way more then enough to make their webseries a reality.

The webseries, Video Game High School, takes place in a future where video gaming has become the biggest sport on earth. Around the world, millions of players duke it out in fighters, RTS’s, First Person Shooters and more. To the victors reap the spoils of glory, fame, and million dollar endorsements.The best young gamers of this future world are recruited by elite boarding schools to sharpen their skills. The best of the best go to VGHS: Video Game High School.

So far they crew has produced two 10 minute episodes, but are in the works for 7 more… We will be waiting. But, until then CDS has grabbed the first two episodes for you (below). Enjoy!

Katrina “Katie” Bowden, was born September 19, 1988 in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Bowden’s first step into the spotlight was back in 2005 when she appeared as the cute blonde in Fall Out Boy’s, Dance Dance music video (throwback!). Ms. Bowden is probably best known for her role as the young ditzy office eye candy, Cerie Xerox, on the Comedy television series 30 Rock. Most recently, Katrina appeared in a minor roll in the newest American Pie movie: American Reunion, as well as gracing the April cover of FHM‘s Cheerleader Issue.

The Amazing Spider-Man, staring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and will be directed by Marc Webb will be swinging it’s way into theaters in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D on July 3.

The plot for the new movie does seem to take some liberties from the traditional story of spider man (or at least from what I remember reading about). In the new film Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield, is an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents when he was just a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Just like the orginal spider man story line, Peter struggles with love, commitment, and secrets (super power!). As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance which leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Irrfan Khan), his father’s former partner (this is where things fly off the tracks for me). As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become the outcast hero we all know and love.

Ok… so, first I have to admit that I don’t really know much about Peter’s parents. And come to think of it… I don’t think it was ever really addressed. But, parents back story aside, what happened to Peters friend Harry Osborn? Isn’t that the connection to Oscorp? I’m confused. And the trailer leads me to believe that Peter’s father had super powers too… And he was meant for this. “Do you know what you really are?” - Dr. Curt Connors. Huh. I guess we have to watch this movie as what it is. A stand alone movie that takes bits and peaces from the original spider man comics. The movie looks really good. CGI look decent, and the acting appears to be solid. I don’t really see The Amazing Spider-Man over taking The Avengers new box office throne, but I think it will do well. This is where it all begins: A single city taking action against an obvious problem.

In the city of Fort Lee, New Jersey, police officers are now issuing $85 jaywalking tickets for pedestrians seen walking while texting. After 3 pedestrians having been killed so far this year and 74 ‘pedestrian crashes’ (whatever that means), Fort Lee has taken action, stopping 575 people in violation so far this year and having issued 117 tickets… and counting.

OK, I can feel everyone rolling their eyes, muttering, under their breath, “oh great, another law…” Well, you know what? We happen to agree with this one.

I am so sick of idiots, glued to their phones with no regard for anyone else around them. It was about time that someone took action and I can only hope that this law begins circulating nationwide. Honestly, the only reason you would question this law is if you live in a two-horse town and don’t have to worry about idiotic teenagers, college students, or business folks who walk down the street as if they are the only person on the planet.

So, that’s our stance, but I can imagine that some of our readers disagree, which is fine… but you’re wrong. You are one of the idiots who care more about a 4″ screen than the world around you, which is very much not cool dude stuff.

In honor of the new Avengers movie, Marvel is seriously trying to capitalize on every ounce of super hero money making awesomeness they can. If you don’t believe in cloud storage and still carry around a flash drive, an 8GB Iron Man head with light up eyes is a pretty cool way to ‘flash’ your nerdy’ness. The drives come in Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and of course Iron Man. I have found Iron Man, Thor, and the Captain, but not Hulk…

Gotta’ catch’em all!

After-Effects guru Zack King, of the short film production team FinalCutKing, has created a short video of his real life hunt for the Pokemon character, Pikachu. Much to everyone’s surprise, Zack catches one! But, apparently having a Pikachu as a pet isn’t all it’s worked up to be… The film is kind of silly until the unexpected twist at the end, so stick with it.  

The Bikini Hockey League has announced that they will be having an open casting call to all women. Apparently, there are no requirements, you just have to submit head and body shots (so… nothing about the ability to skate or having any prior hockey experience?). After the league has completed it’s casting call, creator Tulsan Cary Eskridge is going to begin filming in an attempt to pitch the league as a reality show. He states that there are already networks that are interested in picking up the program. I, for one, encourage the innovation of new bikini based sports, but hockey? Really? All I can imagine are girls hitting each other, sliding on the ice ripping up their legs, and crying as they limp off the ice. I don’t think this concept, while sexy, will make it past the first major injury.

If you pride yourself in constructing homemade transforming R/C cars, you might want to take some notes. This unbelievable little R/C transformer is able to switch from a sports car to disco dancing robot in just a few seconds, and it can even walk while it’s in it’s robot mode!

The homemade car was constructed by a Japanese man named, Kenji Ishida. The car uses 22 individual servo motors to move it’s limbs and wheels, as well as helping it take on Mega-Tron and the rest of the Decepticons. Apparently, this car isn’t Ishida’s first, nor will it be his last. He intends to be releasing news models of the car over the next year! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
